I have been tutoring/teaching mathematics for over 20 years, in this time I have taught Mathematics in secondary schools up to A Level in parallel with tutoring maths. For the last 10 years I have been tutoring full time and have no other work commitments, other than tutoring maths. For this reason, I am able to focus all my time and energy in planning, organising and delivering tutorials for my students and also spend time perfecting my craft and tutoring techniques.

Every student is an individual, with a unique set of skills and learning needs, for this reason, my approach to tutoring is pupil centred and the pace of the tutorial is set according to the pupil’s ability and how fast they are able to understand the material and complete questions independently. Students are introduced to new topics or existing knowledge is consolidated during tutorials. Students complete exercise questions and then move on to more difficult exam style questions or rich maths activities. The teaching material used is graduated in levels of difficultly and tutor support is gradually removed until the pupils can complete questions independently and explain to me how to form the complete solution to a question. Through formative assessment and pupils input I am able to gauge which topics need to be studied further, this is continually reviewed, as is my own tutoring style and techniques, which I refine, develop and improve through tutoring mathematics. I greatly enjoy seeing people learn and become competent and successful with mathematics. Most the students I tutor preform very well with their GCSEs or A Levels and all students go on to study university degree courses.

I emphasis to students that the best way to learn mathematics is through an understanding from the grass roots level. So rather than learning a series of techniques or rote style learning. I tutor student to understand the reasoning and rational behind the mathematics being applied in every formula, equation or method used in solving a question. In this way students thoroughly understand each step in arriving at the solution. Knowledge gained in this way may be an intellectually challenging at first, however, this level of understanding is retained by students and stays with them until the exams and beyond. Furthermore, I ask students to show complete working out and not write answers only. During tutorials pupils are routinely shown proofs and derivations and given the opportunity to complete more challenging problem-solving type questions, where they learn through discovery. From experience, the top grades in GCSE and A level maths are obtained by those students who have an in-depth understand of mathematics and are able to derive formulae and algorithms they use in solving exam questions.

Please see testimonials from previous and current students and their parents,

My techniques and style of teaching and learning mathematics started to form while I was a student myself. I have been very fortunate to have been taught by excellent teachers throughout my education. I have come across great teachers and lecturers from A level (where I gained AAA) to degree level at university (UCL) (first class honours; Mathematics and Physics) and also while studying for a postgraduate teaching qualification (PGCE)(Canterbury Christ church University).

Since I will be helping you to prepare for your exams and achieve to your full potential. I think it’s important for me to be as transparent as possible about my own qualifications. Please see certificates appended below: (click to enlarge)
